Ottawa Ghosts: Haunted Victorian Mansion

Ottawa true ghost stories Victorian

Ghost report from Audrey on November 17, 2016:

“I lived in an old Victorian mansion (cliché, I know) on Powell Avenue in Ottawa. The very first night we moved in, my sisters and I felt something odd, as though we were being observed. The activity started slowly but surely, and increased incrementally every year we lived there. What we experienced daily in that house isn’t something I would have ever believed had I not lived through it.

While we never saw anything as dramatic as an apparition, we experienced just about everything else. Doors shutting and footsteps – always on the floor you weren’t on – were constant. Whenever someone was in the bath on the second floor, you’d hear a knock on the door but, of course, find no one when you opened it.

Many times I would walk into a room or hallway and feel like I was interrupting a conversation. The house had a sense of business about it, as though there were constantly people bustling around, even when it was empty. It was really freaky when the spirits started impersonating voices.

One time, my sister and father were in the kitchen. They heard my mother call my father’s name, as she often did when she wanted something, and without saying a word they migrated their conversation upstairs. I was sitting with my mom in the TV room, and we’d been talking the whole time, no one had called him.

One time in the deep winter, my sister and I were sitting in her room chatting, our parents were out of town and we were alone in the house. We heard footsteps upstairs, and suddenly they turned into LOUD dancing, as though someone was doing an incredibly forceful jig just above our heads. It went from one end of the house to the other, clear as day. It was almost like it was trying to upset us. We ended up running out into the street, we were so afraid.

Another time, I came home from school at lunch and was hurriedly trying to finish my homework before my next class. All of a sudden upstairs, although I was alone in the house, I heard doors slamming and someone running down the stairs. The noises were so loud and real that I freaked out and called my dad at work, who came home immediately to find me shaking on the front porch clutching my dog. He took a knife and searched the whole house for an intruder, but found nothing. A couple of months before we moved, he experienced the exact same thing when he was alone in the house.

It was odd that the spirits finally revealed themselves to him right before we moved, because he had never personally experienced anything in all the 10 years we lived there except in the final few months while we were packing up the house. I think they were upset that we were leaving.

We later found out that a family of women, a mother and two daughters, had lived in the house for decades and all of them died there. The wake for each was held in the living room. We don’t know if the spirits we encountered were them, but it makes sense that they would have been more timid to approach my father than they were approaching myself, my mother or my sisters.

A young family moved into the house after us, and I always wonder whether or not they’ve experienced similar events.

I am grateful that I never actually saw an apparition with my own eyes, but from what I experienced in that house, I can say categorically that ghosts are real and that there is something, whether an afterlife or maybe just another plane of energy, that lingers after death. I am not a religious person, so I find this knowledge oddly comforting.”

Ottawa Ghosts: Husband Returns For Visit

Ottawa ghosts haunted paranormal Ontario Canada

Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Ghost report from Chantal on May 9, 2015:

“My husband passed away 3 years ago and he always said that whoever between him and me was passing first was gonna come and show the other that we were still there. So, he passed in April and our wedding anniversary is in May. When he passed we actually were separated, but in a good place in our relationship.

I own a computer and printer like everybody, but I don’t use it, so I never turn it on. And the printer is not plugged into the wall or the computer. The morning of our anniversary, the printer started by itself. It’s been doing it every special occasion, like his birthday, our anniversary, Christmas, my birthday, etc.. So one night I turned everything that could bring lights, the TV, the cable box.. And in my window I have a thick black drape cause I was working over night. Then I took 7 pics, and on only one of them I captured an orb which I tried to debunked and I couldn’t.

So be aware that your loved ones are with you after. It’s a reality.

Thanks for reading my short story.”

Ottawa Ghosts: Dark Apparition Staring At Me

Ottawa ghosts haunted paranormal

Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Ghost report from Ruth on January 12, 2015:

“The first story I am about to tell happened to my mom when she was young (early teens). My mom was living with her parents and, like the animal lover my grandmother was, they had a lot of pets, mainly dogs. Well one night my mom got up in the middle of the night and was going to check on the dogs, so she turned on the hallway light and that’s when she seen this demonic looking creature. As soon as she seen it she ran back to her room which she shared with one of her older sisters. While she was just jumping onto her bed she seen that this creature had followed her. The next morning she took one of the dogs for a walk and out of nowhere at an intersection the dog ran into the middle of the road in front of a car. Mind you this dog usually never does this, he usually would look both ways. Not this time, it was like he was forced to.

My second story is one my mom and I experienced when I was quite young. My mom and I both heard banging coming from our basement. So my mom came to check on my brother, sister and I. My mom seen that I was awake and if I had heard the banging too, I said yes. But no one else was home except the four of us. So my mom grabbed the baseball bat, gathered my siblings and I as we went down stairs to the main floor. My mom told me if she yelled for me to run next door I was to grab my brother and sister and go next door and get help. As I looked out the door holding my sister her father began walking down the walk way. I told my mom he had just showed up and she began questioning him about what just happened. And to our surprise he said it wasn’t him, that he had just gotten off the bus about five minutes or so ago. So my mom and I being creeped out, as my mom found nothing in the basement and our windows were too small for someone to climb through in the basement.

Third story happened about a year after we had just moved to a new house, so I was about 15 at this time (I am now 22). Me and my step-dad’s cousin were up and messing around with my mom’s answering machine when I heard another voice come through. It wasn’t a voice either of us recognized. So when my parents woke up, and after my younger siblings had gone to bed, we told them what we heard and I showed them. So then we decided to try with the four of us in the room and that’s when things got really creepy. We could have sworn we heard my grandmother who passed the year I was born and my step-dad’s uncle. But there was also another voice but we didn’t know who. Eventually my step-dad, being drunk, started calling it on. When we went back to listen to the entire recording we could hear three voices that weren’t in the room. And only two which we recognized.

I kept hearing my name being called as well, and I have always been able to feel or hear, and sometimes see, those who have passed away. But this day was creepy and I heard my grandmother warn us about something. Not sure as to what, but something bad for sure. A few hours later I was sent to bed only to be awaken by an evil presence in my room right after having a horrifying dream. So I ran down stairs to the living room area where my mom had been sitting on the chair and I told her what happened in my dream and what I felt. She said she felt the same way. I eventually got up to grab a drink for my mom and I. Just as I turned my back to my mom she asked what happened to my back. I had no idea what she was talking about at first until she told me. The way she described the markings was as if I had been thrown against our coffee table we had at the time. I looked at my mom and said that is scary because in my dream I had been thrown against the coffee table. 8 months later we moved out, mind you my step-dad and my mom were no longer together.

Last and final story was when I was 16 years old. I had wanted to go and pay a visit to my grandmother at her grave so I just entered the Notre Dame cemetery and was starting to head to the back where my grandmother was. When suddenly this dark apparition was just standing staring right at me. Next thing I knew it was following me and I got a weird feeling to run and get out as fast as possible. So I started running for the exit and every time I looked back it got closer and closer. Still to this day I still feel that dark entity around when I am in some places or when I least expect it.”

Ottawa Ghosts: Ouija Board Opens Gateway

Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

The following report was sent into our website by Jackie on July 30, 2014:

“We have a family home on the outside of Ottawa in a little town named Osgoode. A long time ago when I was 12 we had this stupid idea to use a ouija board. They sell it at Toys R Us, but seriously it’s not a game. Plus the fact that we did contact with a ghost named Nancy that had a car accident, and we did test how it feels to move the glass. And when its pretty much moving itself this happened! Weird thing is that it started to happen after that day, and I don’t think it was a ghost.

Ever since then I was sleeping on the couch facing the back of the couch. One night I woke up very cold and felt someone behind me playing with my hair. I was frozen, I could not move for a good minute. Terrified, I finally broke free and ran to my mother’s room.

A few months later we started seeing a person in the corner of our eye standing at the hall way where the kitchen meets the living room. Everyone saw this at one point, but once you turn your head nothing was there.

The next year, I had my mattress on the ground in my mother’s room. I was just sleeping like always then all of a sudden my bed started convulsing like crazy then stopped, then started again then stopped then started one more time. If you press your thumb down on your arm and slowly slide it down to the palm of your hand, I felt that exact feeling going down my legs down to my feet. I jumped right in my mother’s bed … trying to sleep I could hear noises downstairs. Not to mention the little things that would disappear and reappear.

A month later I’m lying in my bed, then suddenly it felt warm and safe. My bed went down like someone sat down but no one was there. And it felt like someone was stroking my hair gently. I actually wasn’t scared. It reminded me of my grandpa that has passed.

Things started to calm down for a while. I moved out to many places. I’m 24 now with a baby and thought it had calmed down.

I live in a duplex in Brockville and a few days after being there I was getting up and ready to leave at 5 am. Everyone was sleeping. I was making a sandwich and as clear as day someone whispered my name directly in my ear which FREAKED ME OUT. So I just left.

Later that day on my drive home I was on the phone with my sister, windows up and radio off she randomly asked “who’s with you?” I said no one she then said ” I have been hearing someone trying to talk to you this entire conversation”.

Not to talk about weird noises in the kitchen.

Then it gets weirder, we were all in bed sleeping and my 15 month-old was in her crib in her room. Around 12 am my boyfriend wakes up freaking out “where’s Tessa??” I said “she’s sleeping, go back to bed”. Then I SWEAR at 1:30 I woke up to footsteps. Slowly opening my eyes I see the dog on the bed and my boyfriend beside me. I fully open them and I see a full shadow (like someone standing in the dark) of a kid exactly Tessa’s size look at me then run out of the room …. I run to Tessa’s room and she was fast asleep.

The next day I saged the entire house and haven’t had any incidents yet, and hopefully never will again …”

Ottawa Ghosts: Waking Up To My Forehead Getting Wacked

Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

The following report was sent into our website by Dylan on June 27, 2014:

“Well, my story doesn’t really have a conclusion because I was never able to find out anything about the home I had lived in, but I will tell it anyway.

Basically my parents had divorced when I was six and I had lived with my dad. while every second weekend I would stay with my Mom. When I was about 12/13 years old, my mom told me that she had bought a house and that she wanted me to move in with her. I didn’t mind the idea, and of course I wasn’t going to say no, so I moved in with her.

It was an attached garden-home, way out past South Keys (Ottawa), surrounded by forest basically. It really didn’t seem all that creepy at first, just a regular place. That is until I saw the basement. It was a strange basement with a bathroom at the foot of the stairs and with a bend you would find the laundry room and a long skinny hallway leading to an open living-room kind of area. Thing is there was this HUGE wall unit literally the size of the entire wall, and for some reason it felt extremely ominous. Anyway, I was REALLY into video games and I always wanted a cool gaming area or room, so I set up my video game console, tv and radio in the basement living-room area. Now I can’t really say when I truly started feeling “creeped out” or when things started happening, but I can say that I always felt as though I was being watched constantly. The house also had a very grim feel to it, even with all the windows open on the sunniest day, it’s hard to explain. One thing that I also found weird was how old and dated the carpeting was in the basement room along with the couch that had been left behind, it told me that the home was quite old.

When the voices started, I thought I was going insane. I told my mom about it and to be honest I don’t remember her response, although she didn’t jump to the conclusion that it was some paranormal event, which makes sense….Most people wouldn’t.

It would always happen in the basement while I was playing video games on the couch. I would hear my own name in a woman’s voice but it felt like it was coming from inside my own head. It would usually start out as just a regular “Dylan” and then gradually repeat itself louder and louder until it became this kind of harsh toned voice basically yelling my own name. I myself, didn’t even think it was paranormal at the time and thought I was losing it. I have lived in many different places, single homes, townhomes, apartments you name it, and I can tell the difference between a normal atmosphere and that which is inhabited by something else. I will never forget the constant stillness and looking behind my own back feeling like I was being stared at.

I had lived in this home for about 4 years, the voices had started maybe a couple months into it, and I was so creeped out by the basement by this point that I just moved everything to the top floor into my bedroom. Things seemingly got better, at least in terms of hearing my own name in my ear. I can remember the entire time we lived in that house my mom seemed very unhappy due to many reasons but for some reason being in that house seemed to just bring her down, and make us both angry.

One late night I was asleep in my bed as usual, it was probably past midnight at this point and all I can remember is waking up to my forehead getting WACKED. I sat up, eyes wide, quickly trying to comprehend what had just happened to me in my sleep. I could feel my forehead aching in pain so it absolutely happened, I just don’t know what caused it. Weirdest part is, whenever I have some strange paranormal experience like this, I always forget what happened completely after the event. I forget my own reaction to the event, I only remember my own recalling (if that makes sense).

I can remember one other time I was alone in the home one night as my mom had gone out for the evening and the weirdest thing happened. I can remember being in the living room on the main floor, then suddenly all I remember is I appeared in the basement laundry room in the dark to which I immediately snapped out of it. I freaked out because I was alone in the dark basement and reached up to turn on the light, which immediately started flickering and acting weird. Needless to say I got the **** out of there and bolted it up to my room, shut the door, turned on my tv and sat on the bed against the wall until my mom returned.

I can’t remember any other major events other than the overall negative atmosphere and feeling as though I was being watched all the time, in every room. We moved out, and I moved into my dad new house…………..”

Ottawa Ghosts: The Black Leather Belt Hovered Before Me

Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

The following report was sent into our website by Dylan on June 27, 2014:

“This is kind of a continuation from my last story (located here).

I had lived with my mom in what I believed was a haunted home for the past 4 years, hearing voices being physically assaulted, you name it. When she finally sold the home I moved in with my father who had ironically also just bought a new home.

This one was even older. His new home was a single house from the 1950’s, very old looking. It was a nice place though and I didn’t think much of it. I just wanted out of the creepy place in South Keys (Ottawa). I had been coming here on the weekends for the past couple months anyway and hadn’t experienced anything so I was pretty content with moving there. It only took a few weeks until I started feeling creeped out. The feeling was back, that feeling as if someone is right over your shoulder watching your every move, analyzing you.

There were a few extremely strange events which unfolded at this home. I had a friend over once, when I was like 16 years old and we were getting ready to go meet up with some other friends. I was upstairs and she was in the living room. All I remember is her saying “What was that Dylan?” to which I came running
down the stairs saying “what?”. I hadn’t said a word. Other than being creeped out, nothing too noticeable happened until a while later.

At this point, I was about 20 years old and was working a full-time job while paying my dad some cash to help him out with groceries and what not. I’m pretty routine, I would usually come home at around 5pm, make myself some food, go into my room watch something while I ate then spent the rest of the night playing video games. This one particular night, I had been doing the usual, just had finished eating my dinner and was just sitting in my computer chair watching something on YouTube. I should probably mention, when we had moved into the home, it was remodeled in a way that would benefit someone with a walking disability, possibly an elderly person on their deathbed. There was a makeshift bathroom built into the kitchen on the main floor leading me to believe that this person who had the disability was staying in the one bedroom on that main floor, my current bedroom. The way the room was laid out was you walked in and directly in front of you you would see my computer desk, to the right of that was my bed and parallel from the bed was the huge walk in closet, which always freaked me out.

This particular evening, I was sitting in the chair, watching videos as I said earlier, and I just felt this sudden urge to look behind me as if I had sensed some presence there. To my horror, all I recall is seeing my black leather belt (which I had thrown on the floor in front of the closet) hovering strangely off the floor as if it was being picked up. Weirdest part is, the rest is a complete blackout. I have absolutely no idea how I reacted to it, and I have no idea what I did for the rest of that night.

Since these two homes I have lived in 4 different places, in none of these locations have I experienced paranormal events.”
