Victoria Ghosts: ‘Heavy Footsteps Descending the Stairway’

“In 1988, my husband and I bought an old character house in Victoria, British Columbia. It was in a neighbourhood with much newer homes, but we fell in love with the old-time home built in 1914.

My neighbour, kitty-corner to my home, was an elderly lady who dropped by one day to introduce herself. She told me she had grown up in our house, and that it had burned down years before, killing a small boy and his father. Two years later (1914) the house was re-built, and that is when my neighbour lived there as a young child. I was fascinated by learning this history about my much-treasured home.

One evening, my husband went out with his friends, so I was home to watch the children. My eldest son, Robbie, was about three years old, and his brother Nicholas about 16 months of age. They shared a bedroom upstairs in a converted attic, made into a lovely bedroom. There was a set of fairly steep wooden stairs that led to their room.

One night, as I sat alone, and the boys were asleep in their beds, I heard loud, heavy footsteps descending the stairway.

I called out to Robbie to get back to bed. There was no reply.

So I went to the stairway and saw no one. I went upstairs and both boys were fast asleep. This happened a few times.

And one night I heard my husband call out to Robbie, to get back to bed. The boys again were fast asleep, and this time my husband heard the loud, slow, moving footsteps come down the stairway.

Eventually, we sold the house, and years later I went to the house and knocked on the door. I introduced myself to the new owners, and the woman was holding a small baby in her arms. I asked her if she had ever experienced unexplainable sounds in the house and she quickly called out to her husband and invited me in.

They both shared with me the strange going ons in the house, and also the footsteps coming down that stairway. I truly believe it is the boy and his father who were burned to death back in 1912 in this old house. I have since lived in two other homes and never experienced anything like this again.”

True Ghost Story: Harrassed by the Old Hag

Location: Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

The following report was sent into our website by Joe on Nov 27, 2006:

“For five years I lived in a haunted house in Victoria. I would like to share with you a few of my stories. It started out very small things would go missing and weeks later would return to the same place were they disappeared from. This not only happened to me but to my mother. But as time went on things got worse.

Now I like to share with you three of the most terrifying nights of my life. My bedroom was located in the basement, nothing ever happened upstairs only in the basement. One night I was laying in my room getting ready for bed. It was me and my two dogs, I still can feel how cold it got in my room that night, I couldn’t see anything but I knew something was standing right over me. I was so scared that I couldn’t even scream for help. The other thing that freaked me out was that the dogs were shaking. While this was happening my brother who was in the other room came in, he too was shaking with fear. We made our way upstairs and slept on the couch that night.

Not too long after this happened I had a friend over, it was around 4pm, we were in my room listening to music when he said to me that he felt as though something was watching us. I had never told any of my friends that I thought the house was haunted before this. I also could feel something standing in the doorway of my room. On my wall my mother had hung rosaries and some crosses. Without warning one of the rosaries had begun to swing back and forth on the wall, my friend seen this and bolted from the house. While leaving he ran my mother over. He was my friend for 15 yrs but he refused to come inside that house again.

One night I left my job and started to walk home. I heard someone calling my name, I turned around and at the end of the road there was this old lady dressed in really old clothes and she was mad because I wouldn’t come and see her. I ran home but no matter how fast I ran she was still always a block behind me. I got home and told my parents but I don’t think they really believed me.

Later that night I woke up and before I knew it my body was pinned to the bed. Someone was sitting on me holding my arms over my head. I tried everything to move but couldn’t, then it was gone. While this was going on at first I thought my brother was playing a joke on me. But I was a 3 yr bodybuilder at the time and when I couldn’t move what was holding me down I knew I was in trouble. I was 16 when this happened and I moved out as soon as I could.

To this day my mother and youngest brother still live in the house. They have had their church friends over to bless the house, but it is still haunted — not to the degree it was when I was there, but the ghost still let them know that they’re here.

Thank you for taking the time to read some of the things that I endured while growing up in Victoria.”
