“I lived in an old Victorian mansion (cliché, I know) on Powell Avenue in Ottawa. The very first night we moved in, my sisters and I felt something odd, as though we were being observed. The activity started slowly but surely, and increased incrementally every year we lived there. What we experienced daily in that house isn’t something I would have ever believed had I not lived through it.
While we never saw anything as dramatic as an apparition, we experienced just about everything else. Doors shutting and footsteps – always on the floor you weren’t on – were constant. Whenever someone was in the bath on the second floor, you’d hear a knock on the door but, of course, find no one when you opened it.
Many times I would walk into a room or hallway and feel like I was interrupting a conversation. The house had a sense of business about it, as though there were constantly people bustling around, even when it was empty. It was really freaky when the spirits started impersonating voices.
One time, my sister and father were in the kitchen. They heard my mother call my father’s name, as she often did when she wanted something, and without saying a word they migrated their conversation upstairs. I was sitting with my mom in the TV room, and we’d been talking the whole time, no one had called him.
One time in the deep winter, my sister and I were sitting in her room chatting, our parents were out of town and we were alone in the house. We heard footsteps upstairs, and suddenly they turned into LOUD dancing, as though someone was doing an incredibly forceful jig just above our heads. It went from one end of the house to the other, clear as day. It was almost like it was trying to upset us. We ended up running out into the street, we were so afraid.
Another time, I came home from school at lunch and was hurriedly trying to finish my homework before my next class. All of a sudden upstairs, although I was alone in the house, I heard doors slamming and someone running down the stairs. The noises were so loud and real that I freaked out and called my dad at work, who came home immediately to find me shaking on the front porch clutching my dog. He took a knife and searched the whole house for an intruder, but found nothing. A couple of months before we moved, he experienced the exact same thing when he was alone in the house.
It was odd that the spirits finally revealed themselves to him right before we moved, because he had never personally experienced anything in all the 10 years we lived there except in the final few months while we were packing up the house. I think they were upset that we were leaving.
We later found out that a family of women, a mother and two daughters, had lived in the house for decades and all of them died there. The wake for each was held in the living room. We don’t know if the spirits we encountered were them, but it makes sense that they would have been more timid to approach my father than they were approaching myself, my mother or my sisters.
A young family moved into the house after us, and I always wonder whether or not they’ve experienced similar events.
I am grateful that I never actually saw an apparition with my own eyes, but from what I experienced in that house, I can say categorically that ghosts are real and that there is something, whether an afterlife or maybe just another plane of energy, that lingers after death. I am not a religious person, so I find this knowledge oddly comforting.”

The following report was sent into our website by Megan on Sept 6, 2016:
“I was living in Thunder Bay, Ontario when these “incidents” occurred and that was back in 1990 to 1996. We had just moved into a farmhouse with 110 acres of land — 5 acres which was cleared and the other 105 acres was bush/forest.
After about a week we decided to explore the forested land and we came across some really odd things. First, we came upon a vehicle that looked just about brand new. It was a 1946 Chev Fleetline and I’m not kidding when I say it was in perfect shape. The chrome was as shiny as a dime, no scratches, but it had one small dent on the passenger door as if a baseball had hit it.
The odd thing about it is there’s no way this vehicle was driven there in recent time. The trees surrounding it were older, each one approx. 12 inches wide and 150 feet tall with absolutely no room to drive a vehicle in. Also, the ground was spongy moss with lots of brush, no tire tracks anywhere. We found this so odd. It was like the vehicle was dropped from the sky.
We found odds and ends in the vehicle and I found a small diary in the glove box. The first entry was dated April 28, 1938, and notations about an impending war. There was a name at the beginning of the diary, but for privacy reasons I prefer not to mention it. The strange thing about the name on the diary is it’s our last name AND my husband’s first name, James. Is that freaky or what? And that is not the name of the people who we bought the home from.
I tried to get a hold of the previous owners and she mentioned that her brother (age 84) had passed since we bought the home and she had no idea who the name on the diary was nor anything about a car being in the forest. She also told us that her brother who owned the home for 40 years had mentioned that there was the original homestead on the property, but she didn’t know where.
So a couple of weekends later we had a housewarming party and my husband and I and four other couples took a walk through the forest to try and find this homestead. Our guests’ mouths dropped open when we reached the old car that we had found earlier and couldn’t believe the condition it was in. “Jeff” said that’s impossible. Someone must have painted it in not too earlier before, but we had no indication of that by the ground around it. We ended up selling it to him later that month.
So back to the forest… We found the homestead and it was right beside a small river or creek. It had a hand pump with actual spring water. Although it had seen better days, the inside was relatively in good shape. Possibly a squatter over the years had been there because we found some newer name-brand canned foods and other things that were placed there from that time period of the 90’s, like a wind-up 70s clock, some plaid shirts, Fruit of Loom underwear, etc., so recent stuff.
But, there were also many old rusted items that we found in a storage addition at the back of the home, things I didn’t know what they were but my husband and his friends knew, many things attributed a blacksmith like farrier tools (tanged rasp, hoof nippper, nail clincer, a trammel points, etc) and a beautiful old Seaton tool box and many, many other 18th century tools and large equipment. Our friends said you hit a gold mine and later it proved to be true, but that’s another story. There was also a diagram of the anatomy of horse legs, so I’m sure he was a farrier/blacksmith.
There was also an old chest under all the ruble and I loved it, so I asked my husband to bring it back to the house because I was going to re-finish it. Later, when I replaced the lining I found a plastic bag hidden in the lining with postcards and also hundreds and hundreds of date-stamped stamps from all over the world, but mainly Germany (1945-46), some military metals, etc.
So now that I’ve explained what we found, the idea of doing “ghost hunting” or any of the type of stuff they do now was really not heard of in the 90s, not like it is now. So when one of the members in our party had asked if they could come back at night with their tape recorder and explained what they wanted to do, my husband and I laughed and I remember saying to him “You’re not serious are you”? I said “Whatever turns your crank”.
They came back the following weekend and they went to the homestead. They came knocking at our door and said, “You’ve got to listen to this”.
They proceeded to play the tape recording and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. There was a woman’s voice that said, “We need the Carlson’s pig”, whatever that meant. It was like she was carrying on a conversation with someone and didn’t know our friends were in her home.
Over the next few years they kept coming back and would play what they recorded. I was so freaked out and I pleaded with them to please tell me the truth. Were they hoaxing us? They were adamant they weren’t and that we could go back there with them. Well I didn’t want to go there at night and I said if there are ghosts there I can’t see whether it mattered if it was daytime or nighttime so I said I would go during the day and my husband and I did.
I couldn’t believe it. They caught all kinds of voices on the tape, but I also heard things with my own ears like someone snoring, like they were sleeping. I heard a woman’s cough and I saw fleeting dark shadows darting here and there. I was so scared I left them and walked back to my home.
While I was on the bush path I thought my husband was walking behind me so I was starting to talk to him and when I turned no one was there. I didn’t hear anything other than the normal sounds of a bush like birds chirping, wind, things like that. But I saw a couple of dark shadows going from tree to tree about 30 feet behind me. God, I was so scared I ran back so fast and locked my door. This was 2:00 in the afternoon.
Well all the years I was always a skeptic of anything to do with ghosts or ufo’s, but within the five years we owned that property our friends had so many tapes of recorded things. I couldn’t believe it. It would take me all day to write down all the strange things that happened to us at that time and the odd structures and symbols we found on that property.
When things began happening in our home that’s when I was done. I couldn’t live there anymore and we ended up selling the property and it had all started when I brought that stupid chest in the house to refinish it. I started to feel really strange and things like lights going on and off on their own, tapping on our bedroom window, my bathtub filled up one day only to come home to a flood of water that soaked the bathroom and the hallway floor AND there was NO PLUG in the tub. How could that be?? Pictures that just fell off the wall in our spare bedroom and I had a beautiful large mirror that my mum had given us and we found it smashed on the living room floor when we came back from groceries one day. Things were happening on a daily basis.
We had four dogs and two cats because we took in rescue animals and all of them, although they were in kennels outside, started to get ill within a short period of time… this went on for the next few years.
One night my husband went on a fishing trip for a couple of days and I had a girlfriend stay over and I had fallen asleep on the couch. I awoke during the night to my ankle being grabbed. It was like someone had placed a bag of ice cubes on my ankle. I awoke instantly and the living room was very dark, but at the end of the couch I had a recliner and I saw a very dark shape sitting in that chair.
It took a few moments for my eyes to adjust because I thought it was my girlfriend who also fell asleep because that’s where she was sitting, but the figure was so much larger than a woman because she was a tiny thing, so I knew it wasn’t her.
So I shut my eyes and screamed her name at the top of my lungs and she ran in a few moments later asking what the hell happened. I told her what I saw and she kept saying you must have dreamt it, but I didn’t. I know what I saw.
Well that was the last straw. We sold the house the next month and we left everything that we had found on that property (that we hadn’t sold) exactly where we found it. I even had my husband put the chest back in the homestead.
I know that you have much more frightening stories on this blog, but you had to go through what we went through those many years ago and I will never make fun of anyone who believes in spirits. I’m a believer.”
“To sum it all up it was a lodge, in particular from what my father had told me it was a loggers (floating) lodge at one point, but was found abandoned and half sunk so my father took that opportunity to restore it to its former glory but he never expected the extra visitors that came with it.
Eventually I got to the point where I no longer wanted to live in this lodge because I couldn’t stand the paranormal activity. So I pleaded and begged my dad if I could move in early with my boyfriend, despite the fact that our relationship was still very new. I was able to sway him to allow me to move in with my boyfriend and his parents just until we got a place of our own.
After I had moved out, my father began renting rooms out to tourists. It was at this point where my father realized that perhaps I wasn’t full of “shit” as he had called me and that maybe I was telling the truth.
The one room that many people had stayed in turned out to be the exact same room as mine that I had spent many years in.
The common complaint among the majority of the tourists was that someone would come into their room in the middle of the night, walk around their bed, and stand at the foot of the bed staring at them. They would hear the footsteps in the hallway slowly working their way up to their room and then they would feel the presence of someone come in. But most were too afraid to look and see who the intruder was, so naturally in the morning the tourists would confront my father in regards to see if he had intruded into their room at night.
At first my father laughed it off and responded that he would have no reason to do such things. But then after countless people complained of the exact same strange coincidence he started becoming a believer.
It wasn’t all cashed up to this one particular incident, this lodge is beyond terrifying. In fact a number of years back, perhaps around 2010, I moved back because my husband and I were going through difficult times and the lodge was a place that was always offered to anyone in the family who needed a place to stay as it did have roughly 15 rooms.
Even after 10 years of time, maybe even more, there was still a high amount of paranormal activity. My husband ended up staying in the lodge with me as well. When I had told him that the lodge was a little haunted and to not be afraid he seemed more of a skeptic, he laughed it off. But after staying in the lodge within 3 months, he had seen and felt enough to become a believer as well.
One instance happened when it was just him and myself alone in the lodge. It was early morning and my husband had decided to wake up and make a big breakfast for the two of us. The kitchen was huge to say the least, there were two entrances one that led from the hallway down to the rooms and had a staircase that would take you to the lower level, and also an entrance from the living room area.
I was in the process of getting dressed when I had heard Dave hollering from the kitchen, but I didn’t hear what he was saying so I just continued getting dressed. I heard him say a few more things but didn’t bother yelling back.
It turns out that while Dave was cooking breakfast he had seen me walk by him to the lower level and he assumed that I was going to have a shower. He asked me as I passed by if I was heading to have a shower and if I wanted him to come because he knew how freaked out and uncomfortable I was when I went to shower. He then asked again and called “Baby?” twice. No response, so he assumed that perhaps I was just ignoring him.
I finished getting dressed and I walked in from the stairway/hall entrance. He immediately asked me, “Did you have a good shower?” My response of course was No. He then proceeded to ask me if I had at least just come from downstairs, “Didn’t you just come from downstairs?” By this time he was really starting to wig me out and I confronted him by saying, “What are you talking about? I was just in the bedroom getting dressed? How could I possibly be in two places at once?” His face went so uncharacteristically pale that I knew something was up.
He explained to me later that he had seen a tall, young lady that looked very similar to me with long dark hair which is why he had assumed that it was just me. The tips of her hair had passed out of the corner of his eyes and the body had headed downstairs.
This was not the only strange incident when we stayed in that lodge. We often heard the phantom steps of someone walking the halls at night. Also our cat, she acted so strange during the night. She ran into one of the furthest rooms down the hall and hid under the bunk bed in a far corner and refused to come out. I literally had to go and fetch her myself, not a pleasant situation. I hated going into the rooms that were the furthest down the hall, they made me so uncomfortable and scared, the hairs on my neck always stood on end.
Not only that, I conducted a few experiments on my own. When my husband happened to be in town, as I did not like to see the end of the hallways and the other rooms, I put up a double mattress that would block the hallway to the other rooms. All throughout the day I was spooked. I heard noises and steps and so many noises I couldn’t find the source of.
I found enough courage in myself to speak directly to the spirits or spirit that was bothering me. At first I asked it to make a small knock on my door to let me know he was there. I did this experiment a few times. Each time I asked the spirit to knock a little louder, and every time there would be a knock.
At this point I thought it was incredible because I had never attempted to contact any of them and I thought that maybe I was losing my mind. So I asked them or it, whatever you want to refer to them as, to make a loud sound something very significant to show with force that they in fact were there.
Within minutes, the mattress that I had strategically placed to block out the hallway and the other rooms was pushed over with such force on my door that I thought that someone was trying to break down the door to my bedroom. I was extremely shaken from this, so I decided to stop and further meddling with this spirit might aggravate it.
Hours crawled by and I felt like I would be alone in the lodge forever. Finally my husband got home after me sending him multiple pleading texts for him to come back to the lodge because I was too afraid to stay by myself. He finally came home and he saw on my face that I was visibly shaken, and I was a blubbering lunatic trying to explain what had happened.
After a couple hours I had calmed down and had told him everything that happened and asked if he believed me despite the fact that he said that he did. I guess the spirit figured that wasn’t enough because the mattress that I had stood up again to block the hallway off was mysteriously pushed over again with enough force that it had my husband jumping off his feet ready to knock whoever out that was on the other side of the bedroom door.
He opened the door and sure enough the mattress was flat down in front of the door.
By now my husband was thoroughly convinced that the lodge was haunted. Even he couldn’t stand being in certain places alone in that lodge, particularly the downstairs bathroom and the cargo bay was hair raising.
On multiple accounts people have said that there was something strange about that lodge. My father himself and his girlfriend had heard eerie, old music coming from downstairs, as if played from an old record player. On closer inspection they couldn’t find a single thing downstairs that played music, let alone would sound like music.
I personally think that there are multiple spirits trapped in the lodge, and unfortunately some of them are just trouble makers but there is a fair share of very dark and unhappy spirits. There are places in this lodge such as the cargo bay or the downstairs bathroom, you can’t stay more than ten minutes in the area because you feel as if something really bad will happen to you and your skin just crawls. You feel as if you’re being watched in the bathroom and you shower so quick that its more or less a drip dry shower because you can’t stand staying any longer than necessary in the bathroom.
I was never able to find any research on this lodge. All I know was that at one point it was meant for loggers. When it was dug up it had extremely expensive logging equipment in the bottom of the lodge, the bilge. Of course all of this equipment was thrown out or had to be salvaged, most of it was water logged and covered in fine silt like mud. Months on end I would help my dad clean out the smudge and gunk to try and get it to float again which eventually it did. His intention was to sell it, but the sheer number of misfortunes and bad luck that surrounded it made me wonder.
In the end he was never able to sell it, nor was he able to make any money from it, as the upkeep of such a large lodge and not enough profit caused him to give up. He gave in throwing his hands up and stopped working on it. And I no longer know who the current owner of that particular lodge is, but the heartache and sheer frustration it caused my father was enough for him to want nothing more to do with it.
He still to this day won’t say for sure that he was certain it was haunted. But he did tell me that there was without a doubt something very unusual about that lodge. My father is a very skeptical man himself, even confronted with unexplained phenomenon he still refuses to believe what his own eyes and heart tell him. And despite the fact that he likes to play it off as if he doesn’t believe in it, he has told me before that he sensed something or someone in that lodge.
At one point in time I believe it was called Tasso Lodge and and that he had found it abandoned up towards Alaska. To this day I still will not go in the lodge even if you paid me to.
Thank you for your time, and your patience. This story that I have relayed to you is accurate 100% and I can almost guarantee that if one was to go in this lodge as of today it would still be haunted. Whether or not you’re brave enough to step onto it is a whole different story to tell. The first steps onto this lodge into the cargo bay will set your hair on ends and make you sweat uncomfortably.”
“We moved into an apartment in North Bay on Worthington Street West. It was a building with a barber shop downstairs, an upstairs apartment and downstairs apartment. When we first looked at the apartment there were two doors with no handles, only locks. We asked the landlord what was in those rooms and he stated it was storage. We asked to see in the rooms and he never wanted to show us. As we had no other option we had to move in to that apartment.
There was always cold drafts of air coming from the 2 rooms from under the door. This seemed a little strange, but we just associated it with the building being old. Shortly after we moved in things started to happen.
A box of Kraft dinner went flying from on the counter to across the room hitting the wall on the other side. A couple of weeks later I went into the kitchen only to see the 26 ounce bottle of alcohol was parallel to the top of the fridge standing up floating in mid air. As soon as I saw it, the bottle fell to the floor and landed standing up as if someone had picked it up and put it down on the ground.
I also woke up with the front of my hair cut only on one side, and then a couple days later I woke up to have it both the same length….. I accused my boyfriend of trying to scare me and he swears to this day that he never did it…..
We would be woken up during the night by something running up the stairs to our apartment or running something through our metal vertical blinds.
The last straw was when we woke up to a party downstairs. We could hear people talking downstairs, the water was running, it sounded like there was a party which would not be unusual except for the fact that no one else was living there……. We were the only ones in the building when all this happened. The bottom apartment was vacant . At first we thought people had broken in downstairs and were using it as a party place but in the morning when I went to look outside there was not one foot print in the snow leading to the downstairs apartment. As soon as we were able to find another place to live we moved the heck out of there.”
“I was living in a beautiful old Victorian home with my 4-year-old daughter. The house is located on Church Street where it still stands to this day.
One night around 11:00 p.m., I had completed my usual routine of locking the doors and closing the windows in my old Victorian home before going to bed. As I was trying to sleep I heard a male voice coming from the right side of my bed say, “Hey! Get up!” As I lay there motionless under my covers looking around the empty room and telling myself I must have imagined it.
A few seconds later with much more urgency and directly into my right ear the voice BOOMED loudly, “YOU NEED TO GET UP RIGHT NOW! Go to the bathroom and look out the window! HURRY UP!”
I rocketed out of bed with my heart pounding wildly. Freaking out and unsure what to do next, I knew I had to go check it out – so I did.
I slowly opened my bedroom door feeling like I was going to have a heart attack. I silently stepped out into the inky darkness of my hallway as I carefully inched my way into the bathroom. I closed the bathroom door behind me before I cautiously raised the window blinds. As I looked through my bathroom window, which directly faced my neighbor Charlie’s kitchen window, I saw a man hunched down on all fours crawling on my neighbor’s kitchen floor. To my utter shock and horror, the intruder then turned on a flashlight and looked up to see me looking straight at him. I let out a loud shriek which caused the burglar to jump back and turn off his flashlight before he disappeared into the darkness of Charlie’s kitchen.
Completely panic-stricken and totally terrified, I slammed the blinds down and ran full speed into my kitchen. “Oh Sh*t! Oh Sh*t! Oh Sh*t!”, was all I managed to say as I grabbed the phone and started frantically dialing Charlie’s cell phone number.
Thankfully he picked up after about 2 rings as I screamed into the receiver, “CHARLIE SOMEONE BROKE INTO YOUR HOUSE AND IS ROBBING YOU! COME HOME QUICK!”
A few minutes later my neighbor’s car came peeling around the corner of our street. Charlie and two other men jumped out of his car and ran into Charlie’s house only to find the back door in his kitchen standing wide open and a grand total of zero valuables missing. A happy ending for Charlie and his family but not for me…
After his friends had left, Charlie came over to my house to thank me for keeping an eye out on his place. Still in shock, I turned to Charlie and said, “You are probably going to think I am completely crazy but I am going to tell you exactly what happened here tonight. Whether you believe me or not is entirely up to you”.
I described the disembodied male voice that I had heard in my bedroom which prompted me to get up and investigate.
“I just don’t get it Charlie!”, I added shaking my head in disbelief as I finished explaining everything to him.
Well, I kid you not folks, to my complete and utter amazement, Charlie looked at me with a huge grin on his face and responded, “I see you have met our resident ghost. He protects my house and my family so it must have been his voice you heard warning you about what was happening in my home”. (Insert Slack Jaw Here). Yeah, not your average text book answer, is it?
One day, in the fall of 2001, I was alone in my Victorian house, as my daughter was spending the day with her grandmother. Suddenly I heard the sound of the back door opening. Surprised and feeling a little irritated because the person didn’t knock before entering my house, I shouted out, “Just a minute! I’ll be right there.”
I peeked into the kitchen from where I was standing in the washroom. What I saw next will forever remain etched in my memory.
Standing at the back door, I saw a half-figure of a white man who was bare foot and wearing a red bathing suit. He was only visible from the waist down and he was soaking wet.
As he walked across the room, I could hear the sound of his wet feet squeaking on the kitchen floor and the sound of water dripping off him. Stunned, I stared slack-jawed as my mind tried to grasp what I was actually seeing.
He walked to the opposite end of the kitchen, stopped for a moment in front of my cupboards, then he turned to face me. I could see the bottom half of him clearly but I could also see the cupboards through him.
Shocked and rooted to the spot, I said out loud, “Oh my God! You’re a ghost!” He turned away from me and continued to walk down the hallway that led to my living room. Squeak, squeak, squeak, I just stood there in disbelief and watched him walk about half-way down the corridor before he disappeared into thin air, without leaving a trace. Or did he?
Completely freaked out, I ran through every room in the house looking for the half-figure I had just seen but he was nowhere to be found.
Questioning my own sanity at this point, I searched for water on my kitchen floor; surely it must be wet, before I checked the lock on the back door. The kitchen floor was bone-dry and the door was securely locked with a dead bolt.
Needless to say, I packed up all our worldly belongings and moved out of that house a few days later.
It would be interesting to see if the current tenants have experienced anything paranormal in the beautiful old Victorian home.”
“One night during the summer I was on FaceTime with a friend and she saw something in my mirror. I couldn’t see it so she took a screenshot and sent it to me. When you look at it closely you can see a face, shaped as a skull. The photo creeped me out so I washed my mirror and all my windows.
When I woke up the next morning there were small hand prints on my mirror. I thought that maybe it was just my siblings messing with me, so I just ignored it.
The next few days after that I kept getting woken up at exactly 3am in the morning by weird noises in my bathroom. So I would get up and open the bathroom door and there was nothing, no one in there. After that I started covering the mirror on the bathroom door with a blanket and nothing happened for a while.
A few weeks later I figured that whatever was in my room was gone, so I stopped covering the mirror.
That night I was woken by the noise of my dog barking at something in the corner, but I didn’t see anything. A little bit later I woke up because I felt like I couldn’t breathe. When I looked up there was a black shadow figure standing at the end of my bed. I blinked and it was gone.
I never saw it again, it disappeared and was gone out of my life for good.”
