Nanaimo Ghosts: Old Man Breathing

Ghost report from Sharon on April 17, 2015:

“In the early 1990’s I was living in a small apartment in a medium-sized building in the downtown area. I was a single parent of one child. My partner had recently self-destructed and was returned to prison on the mainland, so we’d been forced to move quickly, hence the small apartment.

A few weeks after we moved in, I was sleeping in the only bedroom. My son was with his grandparents at the time. It was darkish in the room, but there was a bright light on a tall pole in the small parking lot outside the bedroom window. I never saw anything, but I sure heard something! It was the distinct sound of an old man’s breathing! He seemed to be in the room with me! It seemed to be above me, as if he, or it, was hovering above my bed! I was totally freaked out. I quickly left the room and spent the rest of the night on the sofa in the living/kitchen/dining room. As I said it was a very small apartment. Maybe 250-300 sq.ft.

In the morning I asked the resident manager if anyone had ever died in that apartment. He said a man had died, not in the apartment, but in the hospital.

I heard this breathing sound many times. One night a friend stayed the night and the sound was so loud I had to go to the sofa, which meant he had to go sleep in the bedroom. When he awoke I asked him how he slept, he said great, except for that guy breathing so loud! Later on he tried to convince me the sound was somehow travelling through the structure of the building. I wasn’t buying it.

In the apartment beside me a young woman lived, above me was a young man whose job required him to travel a lot, and beside him was a youngish weekend father. None of them had breathing issues. In fact at that time there were no tenants older than 35.

I moved out of there after a few months. Whoever he was, I hope he found the white light, and peace.”

Update from Sharon on Oct 8, 2015:

“I happened to run into a friend yesterday who recently moved out of the building I wrote about in my report. Her name is Barbera. She told me that there were many unusual experiences while she was living there. She said that other tenants reported seeing apparitions, hearing breathing for no apparent reason, and feelings of uneasiness.

Barbera has a friend who used to visit her quite frequently at her apartment. His visits became less often and he wouldn’t stay long. When questioned about this, he said that as soon as he turned the corner to get onto the property, he immediately began to feel fear and dread. This is a man who loves the Lord and does a great deal of good for his community.

Barbera reported at least one suicide in the building, and there is a documented shooting as well, with the RCMP being forced to kill a man exhibiting mental illness and/or breakdown.

I’m not an investigator, normal or paranormal, but it would certainly be intriguing to see someone else visit this location. It is in one of the older neighbourhoods of the city, and the building was built on a lot that had a house or houses torn down to make space for this apartment building. Of course the building has had a large number of tenants over the years, and of course those dozens of people are going to have had illnesses both physical and mental. But when I lived there 20+ years ago I never felt anything dark or dreadful.”

Ghost report by Michael on March 25, 2015:

“While working for the BC Mining Museum in 2006, I encountered a number of ghosts while working there.

The first happened in mid-May of 2006. It was closing time at the museum and one of the big draws was an underground train ride through our old mining tunnel that went under the old mill on the site. It was my turn to close up the tunnel which involved locking a large door at one end of the tunnel and walking through the tunnel to make sure no visitors were still in there and locking a second door on the other side.

I began my lock-up like normal, and locked up the first door. Upon walking about 100 meters down the tunnel to the first of three forks in the tunnel (the other two containing exhibits), I noticed a thick mist appearing all around me. I then noticed voices, many of them, some just whispers, other crying out “Help me”. It’s safe to say I ran as fast as I could to the other end. As soon as I passed by the second fork the mist and voices suddenly disappeared.

Doing some research on the subject, I learned that during that tunnel’s construction around 1917 a dozen workers were killed in an accidental cave-in at that first fork in the tunnel.

The second ghost I came across was a silhouette of a man that always appeared at the top of the huge staircase that lead up to the top of the old mill. I would only ever see him from far away, but he always appeared there and never moved. Occasionally he would startle other tour guides by standing at the bottom of the stairs looking forlornly up the staircase.”

UPDATE:

On Oct 17, 2015, we received the two photos above from Bonnie. These photos are copyrighted.

Photo 435 has orbs, which we believe are just dust. We uploaded the photo so that you can decide for yourself.

Photo 436 is interesting. It has an orb of light located by the left elbow of the male. There also appears to be lights on his shoe, however, these could just be reflectors on his shoe. What is ideal about photo 436 is that there are also two lights above him that are just normal lights (not paranormal) which is handy because we can compare the non-paranormal lights to the unknown light on his left elbow. NOTE: Bonnie has just informed us (Oct 19, 2015) that the male in the photo is her husband. She checked his shoes and there is a reflector on the side of his shoe, however, there are no reflectors on the heel or bottom of his shoe.

Keep in mind that when we use the word “orb” we are not saying that it is ghostly in origin. Orb is just simply a sphere.

Bonnie sent us the original photos, so we were able to verify ourselves that there has been no photoshopping done to either of these pics, by checking the EXIF tags. We were also able to determine that both of the pics were taken with a Canon Power Shot SD 130Q IS. The shutter speed was 1/60 seconds. ISO was 500. Aperture was F 2.80 The flash was fired in both pics.

Thank you Bonnie for sending these into us.

Vancouver Ghosts: Old Woman Cooking While Humming

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

The following report was sent into our website by Sabina on June 26, 2012:

“I once lived in a house in Vancouver which was built in 1939, we lived next to a church. Whenever in the house I felt like I was being watched. Sometimes I felt a breath on my neck, or a presence behind me. But one encounter really stood out. I’ve always had trouble falling asleep. So this was very strange. Late at night I was in my bed, when all of a sudden I felt like I was surrounded, even though I could only see one silhouette, in the shape of a tall man. He approached me and said “Shhhh… It’s all right.” Then he put his hand on my forehead, it was as cold as ice. Then I closed my eyes and fell asleep instantly.

Another time I was once sleeping downstairs because I was having a sleepover. I suddenly heard humming from the kitchen. I knew that once when the house was first built an old women lived in the house. As I quietly went into the kitchen, I saw an old woman cooking while humming. I ran back to bed. I never saw her again.

Whenever going in to the basement I always felt an aura of jealously, as if ghosts were watching me wishing they could be young and alive again.”

Newcastle Island in British Columbia – Haunted Database

Location: Newcastle Island, British Columbia, Canada
Type: island
Built: n/a

The following report was sent into our website on January 8, 2012:

“In the fall of 2007 I was attending University in Nanaimo BC, Canada. A few weeks before Halloween my boyfriend and I took the guided, haunted tour of Nanaimo. During the tour we heard the story of Kanaka Pete.Kanaka Pete was a big Hawaiian that lived in Nanaimo with his native wife and their infant daughter. In 1867, after a night of drinking, Kanaka Pete returned home to find his wife’s parents in his home and his wife told him she was leaving him. Pete left and got totally intoxicated. He returned around midnight to find his Father-in-law in the act of adultery (incest) with Pete’s wife, while the Mother-in-law watched and the baby lay beside them. In a drunken fit of rage Pete grabbed an axe and did not stop swinging until his wife, her parents and his daughter were all chopped into pieces.

He fled to Newcastle Island where he was hunted down and captured. After a rushed trial he was hung. He vowed he would return and have vengeance. This scared the locals to the point that neither the Europeans or Natives wanted him buried on their land. He was taken to Newcastle Island, a former smallpox colony that was uninhabited and they buried him in a makeshift, unmarked grave.

Our tour guide told us that his evil spirit still lurks the far side of Newcastle Island looking for revenge and to never be on the far side of Newcastle Island after dark.

This was the most interesting of all the ghost stories we heard that night. My boyfriend and I thought it would be real exciting to go camping on Newcastle Island the following Saturday, especially because it was close to Halloween with the thrill of maybe finding out more about Kanaka Pete.

When we got to the Island we saw signs saying “no camping beyond this point”. We spoke with one old-timer there and were told that for our safety it was dangerous to camp past the signs. He told us spirits that have unfinished business still roam near their graves and that Kanaka Pete is confined to a certain area of the Island.

We set up our camp on the safe side. While we were camping we saw some people in kayaks heading towards the far side of the Island. We never saw them return.

Before dark we took a little hike part way on the far side of the Island. We came across the body of a dead rabbit with it’s head chopped off. It looked as though it had just happened. That was really freaky as we did not see anyone around there. We headed straight back to camp.

When we took the little ferry over to Newcastle it was a calm sunny day. During the night it got cloudy and the winds came up making it even spookier. The winds became very high and the night air became chilling cold. During the night we started to hear some of the scariest noises. Shortly after we went into our tent for the night, we thought we heard a scream coming from the far side of the Island. This really spooked us. Not too long after that we heard more terrifying screaming followed by the sound of chopping. This happened many times throughout the night. It was the most terrifying thing we had ever heard. We wanted to leave the Island but the little ferry would not be back until morning. We were chilled to the bone with fright. Shortly after midnight we heard what sounded like a fierce demonic roar and more screaming followed by violent chopping then the most eerie laughter. Needless to say we spent the entire night huddled together scared to death. We tried calling on our cell phones but we had no reception all through the night, we had reception earlier in the day and the next morning.

Before that night I did not believe in ghosts and thought ghost stories were fun and amusing but after my experience that has now changed. That was the most frightening and horrific night of my life. I believe there is something very evil on the far side of that Island. We could feel it and we did hear it! I will never forget that cold October night on Newcastle Island and I believe to this day the ghost of the evil axe murder Kanaka Pete was nearby.

If we would have ignored the warning signs and camped on the far side of the Island that night I feel we would never have returned.”

=======================================

The following report was sent into our website by Donald on Oct 6, 2013:

“I would like to share an experience I had in August 2013. I accompanied my son and a group of Scout age boys and couple of their parents on an overnight camp on Newcastle Island off the Coast of British Columbia. We had read how Newcastle Island is a hot spot for paranormal activity so we thought this would be a fun experience. One of the boys brought along an EMF ghost meter. One of the youth had seen a found footage movie that he believed to be true, about a group of college students filming a documentary about the paranormal happenings on Newcastle Island back in 2007. Apparently they were searching for the ghost of the notorious axe murderer, Kanaka Pete who was hung then buried in an unmarked grave on the far side of Newcastle Island near Kanaka Bay. The college students went missing that night, their video tape was later found and shortly afterwards severed feet in running shoes were discovered along the shoreline. The severed feet is true, as I had seen many news reports, including CNN, on this a few years ago.

Nothing is better than a late night ghost story when camping. This was the perfect setting. A Paranormal Island, the unmarked grave of an axe murderer, the place of origin of severed feet in running shoes found along the shore over the past few years and a found footage video from the Island, it just does not get any better. We brought along a portable video player and we had downloaded a copy of that found video tape from ITunes called “Severed Footage”. At 11 pm we gathered around the campfire and watched the video. There was some pretty scary paranormal stuff happening in the video and we recognized many of the spots we had seen during the day. There is a big sign saying “No Camping Beyond this Point”. We were told that is as far as the spirits can travel from their tombs and it is not safe camping past those signs. Of course we all thought that was a big joke, but we did set up camp on the safe side of the signs anyway. The students in the video camped on the wrong side of the signs; bad things happened to them, much of it was seen with their night vision camera.

After we watched the video some of the braver boys thought it would be a cool experience to go down to Kanaka Bay and search for the unmarked grave of Kanaka Pete with the ghost meter, just like the students in the video. The adults were less thrilled than the boys. We reluctantly gave in as the boys were all excited and trying to act brave, daring each other to go all the way to Kanaka Bay. When we left on the hike it was a nice warm evening but as soon as we went past the sign that said “No Camping Beyond this Point” a very cold chill hit us that we could feel right down the back our necks. Now all us brave souls became quiet and a little concerned. As we followed the path towards Kanaka Bay a wind came up and was making the most eerie noise through the trees. Then all of a sudden about 100 meters ahead of us appeared two glowing eyes staring right at us, we thought it to be a raccoon or deer’s eyes refection from our flashlights. We turned off the flash lights and the eyes were still there glowing as bright as ever. This was very unnerving, some suggest we turn back but other trying to act brave wanted to continue because the ghost meter had not gone off. As we got closer the eyes disappeared. When we got to the place where we thought we saw the eyes it was the place of the large tree with the supposed symbol of Kanaka Pete on it as seen in the video we had just watched. We were about half way to Kanaka Bay.

As we were looking at the carved symbol on the tree the EMF ghost meter one of the boys was holding started to beep and flash, slowly at first. We all gathered around it watching in amazement. Then it started beeping faster and faster until it hit max reading. I do not know who screamed first but there was a ton off screaming as everyone ran back the way we came. After about 100 meters the ghost meter stopped and so did we. The wind was still quite strong, the air was icy cold and 10 boys and a few adults just had the (blank) scared out of them. Someone suggested that we try passing that point again real fast so we could get to Kanaka Bay. He was voted down by everyone so we headed back to camp. As soon as we passed the “No Camping” sign the wind stopped and the air was warm again. We all thought we could hear a low but audible eerie sound coming from where we had just been. We all sat around the campfire talking about what we had just experienced, no one wanted to go to bed or maybe we were too scared to go to bed so we sat around the campfire till daylight.

Some said it was the most thrilling experience they had ever had while some said it was the most frightening. It is definitely one we will never forget. Camping ghost stories are supposed to be scary and fun…we never dreamed we would become part of one.”

Vancouver Ghosts: The Nasty Devil and Angel

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

The following report was sent into our website on Dec 17, 2011:

“I was spending time with my friends. We had a new loghouse located at the forest near Stanley Park. We thought one of our guests was a thief due to missing items, so we sent them away. After a while, there were unusual things happening… items flying around the room by itself.

One time, my friend reported windows breaking so I went outside to catch the vandal. But there was no trace of someone in sight.

Then the nasty spirit started to talk, it sounded like an evil voice that nobody has heard before. It was saying insults personally directed to my friend, then it started to threaten to break his leg if he didn’t leave.

Then another time lots of people came even challengers, the spirit claimed to be both a devil and angel. It left all of us terrified and confused. After the challenger left, a pastor came and sang hymns with all of us. The evil spirit joined in laughing at the efforts for driving him away. It left, but threatened to return the next day. Me and my friends decided to leave from our terrifying experience. Then it all stopped, maybe the spirit was living there and didn’t like trespassers arriving.”

Vancouver Ghosts: I Refuse To Go Back There

Location: North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

The following report was sent into our website by Lynn on Oct 26, 2010:

“I moved in with my boyfriend to the basement of his grandmother’s house. My boyfriend had disclosed to me that when he was around seven years old he saw the face of a demon through the window downstairs. After a month I began to cry when I would have to be left alone in the house. It always felt like someone, or something, did not want me in the house. When i would work out by myself in the hallway (the only space for my treadmill) I would hear a man’s voice in my head saying “get out” “just leave” “go away”. I knew it wasn’t my imagination as I had never heard the male voice before. I told my boyfriend about this. His grandfather and uncle are both deceased, and he told me they both agreed that girlfriends or boyfriends were not allowed overnight. It was forbidden. I began talking to the voices when I worked out, saying that I respected the grandmother very much. I thought maybe if it was a disgruntled spirit I must be calming it, or at least calming my imagination.

But a month later new things happened. I would wake up every night at 3am, as if someone was telling me to wake up. I always went back to sleep, but the regularity of it seemed odd. After a couple weeks of that when I’d wake up at 3am I would go and sleep in my 2 year old son’s bed with him. The instant I layed down I began hearing voices in my head (and no I do not have any mental history). I would hear my boyfriend’s mom crying like she were a little girl, I’ld hear the other siblings saying horrible things like “don’t do that” “help me” “no.” I was hearing all of them in my head when they were children. I also began seeing in my head memories that weren’t mine. Like hiding under a bed afraid, or running away. I told all this to my boyfriend, he believed me and told me his family past. Well turns out the siblings were abused I guess in some form, and always were abusing each other. I guess growing up in the home was a fearful thing. I don’t know if an actual spirit was giving me these experiences, or maybe it was just the energy of the house. But since we moved out I refuse to go back there.”
