Toronto Ghosts: Haunted Ship in Toronto

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Type: ship
Built: 1952

The following report was sent into our website by M. Wryter on September 26, 2014:

“In 1986 I was a ship keeper in Toronto living aboard the motor vessel D. C. Everest. She was built in 1952 in Kingston, Ontario and at the time of her launch then she was the most expensive of her type and class built at the Kingston shipyards. She flew her flag initially with Marathon Paper Mills, then was sold to American Can and flew their house flag.

Somewhere along her career, she ended up on the scrap list and ended her days in the turning basin in Toronto tied outboard an old Imperial Oil tanker the London. There they sat for a couple of years until I became her keeper and moved aboard.

There was nothing untoward about the Everest, no startling history for her as she was a workhorse and not subject to glamour or anything spectacular in her duties. So this outlines the vessel and some of her history.

It was a hot August Sat. eve in the city and I had invited a few friends over for some good music and some social drinks, a little friendly get together for some relaxing fun. By 7:30 or so everyone was aboard, deck chairs were laid out on the hatches. Speakers were hooked up and a cooler with 3 bottles of wine was placed on the hatch along with glasses, the tunes cranked up (it was a dock so no one as around). We sat and had a few, told stories and chatted about all sorts of things, just relaxing and having fun, the eve flowing well.

At about 10:45 or so some had to leave so the gathering broke up and we all headed to the gangway to say goodnight and go our separate ways. And it was at the gangway that lead to the inboard vessel, the London that we were gathered when someone said, “Look”, and pointed to the stairs on the starboard side of the ship. We all looked pretty well in unison and we all collectively saw a set of legs walking up the starboard stairs case to the Captain’s cabin. All 9 people saw this and everyone was in a state of shock over it.

Some shook their heads, others just in awe, one turned away and was sick. It was one of those unexpected things that happened and everyone reacted to it differently.

We all gathered our wits about it, some laughed it off as too much wine, but the fact was that we had all seen it collectively. The next day I had a couple of calls and it was discussed and after a few days we all agreed it had been seen by us all. Only one woman said that she would never set foot on the ship ever again, and well that was her final response to that eve.

She was eventually towed to India and broken up for scrap, so whatever ghostly crewman that was perhaps he found himself a new home.”

In 2002, Cold Spot Paranormal Research™ went out to investigate a cemetery in Toronto, Ontario, Canada after experiencing activity during a training exercise here. Our team experienced several oddities during our investigation:

Michelle McKay and one of her investigators heard “tap, tap, tap” which sounded like it was coming from the ground below them. It sounded similar to the sound a woodpecker would make, yet sounded muffled. A cause for the activity was not found.

One of our investigators reported her hand feeling numb after dusting off a grave with it. The numbness remained for the duration of the investigation and was mysteriously gone when we left the cemetery.

Batteries were drained in one of the still-cameras while attempting to take a picture of an object. These were indeed new batteries. Michelle even pulled out the batteries and put them back in again, but they still wouldn’t work. These batteries were new and never used before.

Strange incidents seemed to be occurring in the area of a particular statue of an angel in the cemetery. When the team got approximately 25 feet from the statue (angel), the temperature seemed to get warmer. One of the people helping us that night claimed she felt the feeling of “something” walking through her while standing approximately 20 feet from the statue. She then took a picture and said that just as she was snapping it the lanterns hanging next to the statue swung back and forth. The team noted there was no wind or breeze felt at this time, the air felt still. Also, upon leaving the area of the statue, an odor of “fresh baked cookies” (smelled like shortbread) followed the team for the duration of the investigation. The team did not have any food, nor was anybody wearing any cologne or fragrance.

One of our investigators heard a voice say “over here”. She said it sounded like a high-pitched child’s voice. It was noted that no children or people were around.

Michelle and one of her investigators witnessed a dim white “orb” of light fly just slightly above them, about 15-20 feet from the ground. There wasn’t enough time to take a picture of it. It was just slightly bigger than a fist, and was not very bright.

CONCLUSION (written by Michelle McKay):

First I should mention that all photographs from this investigation are 35mm film — yeah, love the analogue days! In my opinion, I believe that photos C2432B and C2432C are moisture reflection. However, photo C2432D has my curiosity, it looks like a shaft or rod coming from out of the grave. We widened and zoomed a copy of the original photo so that you may get a closer look (hence why the photo looks distorted somewhat). We visited the cemetery again at a later date and found no pipes or obstructions coming out of that particular grave.

The tapping noise we heard sounded like it was coming from the ground below us. Very odd. We looked around for a bird in the trees or some other explanation and were not able to determine the cause. However, I still feel that there has got to be some kind of non-paranormal cause that we were unaware of at the time — it’s just too weird. This is the problem with working outdoors sometimes, you just never know if it was an echo coming from somewhere else.

The flying orb of light that we witnessed could have been a fire fly (my great-uncle, renowned UFOlogist Henry McKay, suggested this). The fire flies that I have seen are a lot brighter and smaller. I can’t help but wonder if it just wasn’t one of our flashlights aimed upwards and moving, because it was about that size. This happened very quickly.

The warm spot around the statue I cannot explain. That was unexpected as we were entering into the cemetery before we were able to get any temperature meters out, so unfortunately I don’t have any temperature readings to log here. All I can say is that it “felt” warmer than the rest of the cemetery. Again, being outdoors makes it more difficult to assess.

Although some bizarre strange things occurred, we really cannot present any conclusive evidence of paranormal activity here. It is just one of those things where you just had to be there to see for yourself. This is not to say that nothing paranormal is going on here, just that we did not find any conclusive evidence of it to show you. Just bizarre occurrences. I personally believe that this cemetery is haunted.

Fort York in Toronto – Haunted Toronto Database

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Type: Fort from the War of 1812, our case# M3001
Built: 1793

Cold Spot Paranormal Research™ went out to investigate Old Fort York in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Our team experienced something odd during our investigation:

Two people with us that day saw “somebody” sitting at the benches next to the cannon. They also claimed to see other apparitions of individual soldiers walking the grounds on and off throughout our visit there.

REPORTS FROM OTHER SOURCES:

A female apparition is said to walk around the officers’ quarters

A heavy door has been reported to sometimes slam shut on its own

SITE HISTORY:

Founded in 1793 by Lt.Governor John Graves Simcoe to fortify British control of Lake Ontario. In 1813, being vastly outnumbered by the invading American troops, the fort’s soldiers blew up the gun powder store. Due to the explosion, the fort was almost entirely destroyed, and many were killed. They reconstructed it, and the fort was successful at holding the Americans at bay in 1814. Fort York is Canada’s largest collection of restored “War of 1812” buildings.

CONCLUSION (written by Michelle McKay):

Photo M3001A looks like a hair, spider web or string of some sort. I really don’t think this is anomalous.

Photo M3001B, well, two of my investigators pointed out to me that they saw somebody sitting there. I personally could not see anybody sitting there no matter how I squinted my eyes. So we took a picture of it, which was photo M3001B. Evidence should ideally speak for itself. This photo does not speak for itself.

All in all, it was an interesting investigation. Even though we really didn’t get any impressive evidence, the reports of hauntings here is numerous. Oh well, maybe next time.

The Paddock in Toronto – Haunted Toronto Database

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Type: bar and restaurant, our case# B3230
Built: 1940s

Cold Spot Paranormal Research™ was called out to investigate The Paddock in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We were the very first investigation team to ever conduct a paranormal investigation at this restaurant. We experienced the following oddities during our investigation:

An apparition was seen “poking” its head from the door next to the doorway leading to the kitchen

The apparition (mentioned above) was seen at the same time when we all heard strange prominent “rustling” type noises coming from the area that the apparition was seen.

REPORTED ACTIVITY FROM VARIOUS SOURCES:

An employee reported the following while inside the storage room: an apparition of a man, cold spots, and the feeling of not being alone

A thick, oppressive “gotta get out of here” feeling in the back storage room and back beer locker area

The bartender has reported glasses spontaneously hurling themselves off the mirrored glass shelves. He has also reported the feeling of somebody being in the room with him.

SITE HISTORY:

Some say the alleged hauntings are caused by the ghost of a “murdered gangster” who was rumoured to have been shot to death here. Other rumours say it is the ghost of a man who “hung” himself here. The manager told us that one of the men who were shot made it to the hospital and survived.

The Paddock Tavern originally opened for business in the 1940’s by Morris Fishman. He owned and trained thoroughbreds, some of which won Cups. Hence the name “The Paddock”. This bar and restaurant has a history of live jazz players from New York City; including Oscar Peterson and Alberta Hunter. It also drew a crowd of bookies and “gangster” types. The main floor bar had a downstairs component called The Saratoga Room, Blue Bonnets Room and the Little Saratoga Room.

Mackenzie House in Toronto – Haunted Toronto Database

Location:  TorontoOntarioCanada
Type:  museum
Built:  circa 1859

During the winter of 2003, Cold Spot Paranormal Research™ conducted an investigation at the Mackenzie House. Some of the more popular reports of paranormal incidents at this location are:

  • a hangman’s noose seen dangling over the stairway
  • taps turning on by themselves
  • a toilet flushing by itself
  • the piano playing on its own
  • the ghost of a male, completely bald with ‘side-whiskers’
  • a female spectre with long hair that hangs around her shoulders
  • the printing press operating on its own
  • a rocking chair rocks on its own
  • the sound of footsteps heard on the stairs

William Lyon Mackenzie used to live in this house. He was the first mayor of Toronto, and was later declared a traitor for leading the 1837 Upper Canada Rebellion. He was also a newspaper editor. Even though Mackenzie died in August of 1861, the first report of activity at this location wasn’t until 1960.

“the most celebrated haunted house in Metropolitan Toronto and perhaps in all of Canada” — John Robert Colombo, renowned author

If you look at the above photo of the daughters’ bedroom, you will see what looks like an ‘orb’ in the center-right top portion of the photo. Along with what appears to be the “orb’s” shadow on the wall. We believe this is likely due to reflection from the mirror, which can be seen to the left of the fireplace in said photo. The question is, though, is Mackenzie House in Toronto haunted with ghosts? Well, we did not witness anything unusual during our investigation. Which only means that nothing occurred while we were there. However, at any rate, we will leave you with this author’s words, which we feel best sums it up:

“And while the ghost of Mackenzie may or may not inhabit the house, we believe that his spirit can still be found there.” — Chris Raible
