Ghost Child Seen at Regional Hospital in Medicine Hat

“As my memories of the best job I have ever had fade away with time, Hospital Security Agent, I feel it necessary to share one of my creepy experiences at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

Please keep in mind that I am not an author nor have I ever wanted to be one. Only a select few have ever been told of this story.

All of my notebooks have long been destroyed, and I do not recall the exact time and date. This is written based on a memory of an incident that took place over two decades ago. Hope you enjoy!

Location Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, Level Five, Rehab Support Service Building West end. It was imperative, for the security of property and the safety of people, that this floor was checked thoroughly to prevent theft and from keeping transients from settling in one of the dark corners of the many empty rooms.

In this era, level Five RSS, as it was called, was basically a semi-abandoned floor used for secure storage and it had one room dedicated to Diabetes Education service. It was a poorly lit long stretch of hallway that was formerly nursing units 5 East and 5 West.

Prior to its abandonment, and after 5E and 5W had moved to their new location, Paediatrics had moved onto level 5W awaiting their turn to move to 4 North in the new addition. This floor was eventually totally demolished and rebuilt to its modern state.

Between the hours of, 00:00 and 06:00, in or around fall of the early to mid-1990’s, I was performing a routine patrol of level five of the Rehab Support Services section of the MHRH. I entered the floor from the far east entrance, a stairwell separating the old and new hospital.

The hall was dimly lit as I proceeded from east to west, checking every locked door and every nook and cranny. I reached the west side of the floor and I was checking each open room and entering the next through the connecting bathrooms.

I entered the last empty room, the northwest corner, via the bathroom door, and was shocked when, within my peripheral vision, I saw someone standing in the hallway just beyond the threshold.

I instantly felt all the effects of adrenaline as I realized a child was standing there looking at me!

It happened so fast! The child was there and then just… gone! I stood there dazed, my heart pounding, my hair standing on end and trying to rationalize what I had just seen.

I was convinced it was just fatigue that had caused a hallucination, however, at the time and for years after, I recalled details of this child as if I had seen them in a photograph.

I composed myself and re-checked the whole floor. I was almost positive the child was just a figment of my imagination, but the event seemed so real I had to be sure there was not a child running around the RSS building, however doubtful I was. I am positive I would have heard the child leave the floor through the stairwells or the elevator.

Of course, the search turned up nothing and I remember laughing at myself for being so foolish.

I continued my patrols as usual, but I could not get the sighting out of my mind. I even took a chance with my reputation and told the on-duty paediatric staff of my encounter. I asked if any children had passed away on the 5th floor prior to moving to 4N.

All staff that night assured me that no child had passed on that unit, they also had a good chuckle over it and I think they had a little joy mocking me. I was convinced at this point that it was, in fact, a full-blown hallucination.

This did not last too long, on a subsequent visit to 4N, a staff member was razzing me on the fact that I thought I saw a ghost and I was once again asked to tell my story to a more senior nurse.

This time I did not get the chuckles I was expecting, instead, she confirmed that one child had indeed passed away on 5W RSS. She had known this because she was on duty the same day the child passed.

I was sceptical so I convinced her to show me the room the child was assigned. I honestly did not believe her as she had been a bit of a jokester in the past, but I never revealed to anyone the actual room this happened in, so I was confident she would be exposed if not telling me the truth.

I escorted her to the old RSS level 5, while she told me a heartbreaking story leading up to the child’s passing. To my amazement, she lead me right to the room at the NW corner of level 5 RSS. The description she gave me matched the child I saw standing in the hallway outside of this same room.

I had only seen the child once, but I still have a strong memory of this incident. Of course, this is only one of the many strange things that happened within the walls and halls of the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.”

Banff Ghosts: Juniper Lodge – ‘It Sat on the Bed’

“This happened in June of 1990. My husband and I had gone camping for our one year anniversary, but we decided to spend the actual anniversary night at the hotel where we’d had our wedding reception, the Timberline Hotel which was just outside of the Banff townsite, and is now known as the Juniper Lodge. We parked our trailer in the lot and came in, kind of late in the evening.

We got to our room only to find that it was roasting hot. We called for assistance and a maintenance worker showed up, but he couldn’t turn off the heater, it just kept blowing hot. We tried to sleep, but after an hour or so realized that even with the window open and the air conditioner going, it was too hot to sleep.

We headed back to check-in and were told that there was another room available, but that this one had a problem with the air conditioning unit – it was stuck on. After the heat of the last room, we were happy with that.

Unfortunately, it was just blowing cold air. It was making an unbearably loud sound that made it impossible to sleep.

We went back to the front desk to ask if it would be ok to set up our trailer in the parking lot (it was a tent trailer), but they decided on chancing us in another room.

The staff discussed the room for a bit before offering it to us, because, as they said, it was only used for storage so it might be a bit dusty, the bed wasn’t made, etc. We said we didn’t care. Someone went in and quickly made the bed and we quickly climbed in and settled down to sleep. That’s when the fun started.

It was absolutely pitch dark in the room. The left side of the bed was pushed up against the wall and I was lying on the outside part of the mattress. I heard footsteps approaching down the hallway and then the sound of someone putting a key in the door.

I sat up to tell whoever it was that the room was occupied. I thought it was a staff member coming to get something out of storage, but although I heard the door open, the room remained pitch dark. It must have been someone going into the room beside us.

I settled back down thinking that I didn’t remember the walls being so paper thin when we were there before, but then we’d never stayed in that wing before.

Then, I heard someone walking around in the room.

I sat up again, thinking maybe the door really had been opened, and the hallway light had been out so I hadn’t realized it in the dark. But then I realized that although it sounded like someone was in the room between me and the window, I didn’t see any silhouette as this person walked around in front of the window.

Once again, I assumed it was someone in the room next to mine, and settled back down.

I closed my eyes again, ready to sleep, when I heard a loud sigh right beside me, not from my husband’s side of the bed, but from right beside me in the room.

I was starting to feel confused, I didn’t believe in ghosts, but clearly this wasn’t a sound coming from another room.

Then “someone” sat down on the bed. I moved as close to my husband as I could and tried to wake him by kicking him, but I was so afraid I was finding it hard to move and was only able to nudge him with my foot, and he just kept sleeping.

Now the “person” beside me sighed again, and laid down on the bed, close to the edge. I slowly reached my hand down beside me and felt the mattress.

Slowly moving my hand along the mattress, I could feel the spot where it started to sink down, as a mattress does along someone laying on it. There was clearly somebody there, and this wasn’t just my imagination.

With my left hand, I started pinching my husband and poking at him. Mostly, I just held my breath and tried to keep still.

Finally, finally, “it” sighed again and sat up.

I slowly turned my head towards the window and realized that, once again, I couldn’t see anyone’s silhouette or outline between me and the window. But there was very clearly someone sitting on the bed right beside me.

Then it stood up and walked towards the door.

Once again I “heard” the sound of footsteps and the door opening, but, once again, no light came into the room from the hallway as the door opened.

Now I sat up, turned on the room light, and woke up my husband. Since he had slept through the whole thing, he wasn’t too keen on checking out right then and there, and insisted on going back to sleep.

I sat up with the light on for the next three hours before I finally woke him again and insisted on leaving.

To make it even weirder, when we checked out (no charge, obviously), the staff repeatedly asked us if anything ‘weird’ had happened. We kept saying ‘no’. There was no way I wanted to stand there talking about it, I just wanted to get away from there.

They offered us a notebook to write about our night in, but I was not interested, and we left as fast as you can when pulling a trailer behind. We kept on driving until we got home to Edmonton around 9 or 10 o’clock where finally got to sleep.

Years later we went back and had lunch at the now renovated Juniper Lodge. At the front desk we stopped and asked if they had a guest room that was just used for storage, and I finally told someone at the hotel about our night. The staff said they had never heard of anything odd happening there and that they definitely did not keep a notebook behind the counter for guests to write in.

I’m still not 100% on board with the existence of ghosts, but unless I was hallucinating that night I guess that’s what I encountered.”

“I stayed in the Juniper Hotel, the same one in the story above a couple years ago and had a very similar experience. I had NO previous knowledge of this hotel at all.

I still talk about this story to this day and finally thought of looking up online if there were any other documented ghost stories from this hotel. This is clearly an older hotel that has been renovated.

When my boyfriend and I checked in for a 2-night stay, I noticed that the floors in our room were very creaky.

During our first night, I was awoken by the very sound of someone “pacing” in the room at my bedside between the bed and the wall. My back was toward the sound, but the sound and presence of someone, or something, was very distinct.

I then experienced the same feeling as the above writer described…not being able to move or make a sound loud enough to wake my boyfriend. I was facing his back and I just hid my face in his back and must have fallen back to sleep.

Upon waking, I didn’t initially recall this event. During breakfast in the hotel, I suddenly remembered and told my boyfriend. I then decided to share my story with the waitress to find out if there were any other strange events in the hotel.

Unlike the above story, she quickly told me that yes, people regularly have strange experiences in the hotel and shared the fact that the land the hotel was built on was actually sacred Native land and that when it was purchased, the Natives sold the property with the understanding that they could come back and continue to have their ceremonies on the land, which was still happening at that time.

I’m not sure why this wasn’t shared with the above couple.”

“About 8 years ago in 2009, my husband and I stayed at the Juniper Hotel in Banff for a weekend getaway. During the night I woke up and saw a Native man standing by my bedside.

He was wearing old-fashioned clothes and a hat. He was just looking at me as though he wanted to ask me something.

I closed my eyes and told myself I was dreaming.

I opened my eyes and he was still there. I was scared but didn’t feel threatened by him. I closed my eyes again and when I opened them he was gone. I was definitely awake and not dreaming.

I told my husband about it when he woke up and we mentioned it to staff in the hotel who told us the hotel was built on land that was a meeting place for the Natives and was sacred ground. They said that there had been other people that had paranormal experiences in the hotel. It was scary but also interesting.

We stayed at the hotel again a couple of years later and had our dog in the room with us and she just kept barking so we had to put her in the car. There were no other incidents that night.

Maybe she felt the presence of a spirit there as she would not settle in the room at all. She has stayed with us in other hotels before with no problem.

I am curious who my ‘visitor’ was and what message he had for me. It was real. I was not really a believer in ghosts until this experience. Now I do believe that there are spirits around us.”

“I live on an old Air Force training base in rural Alberta. There’s numerous stories and legends about ghosts walking the streets of Springbrook and among the barracks and abandoned buildings, but I myself had never experienced anything until I recently began using the ‘most haunted’ building as a day care.

As the landlord handed me the key he said “and remember, if you feel him beside you, just tell him to go to the light”.

Yep, that was the first time I ever had that clause in the rental agreement of something.

‘Him’ is Charlie. “Charlie” hung himself while the base was still operational in the boiler room right beside my main daycare area.

I attempted to have two groups come in to the barracks and investigate but they flat out refused to go into ‘building 14’, although they did explore other buildings and homes and found activity.

Leaving me to deal with ‘Charlie’ alone (except for the day care kids who I have not told). Charlie will turn on lights that I turn off before leaving at night down a hall way that is locked at both ends. I’m the only one with keys to the building. You will hear him walking down the hall and clanging pans upstairs in a huge industrial kitchen with no power or pans that has been empty for 2 years since cadets stopped coming.

I have tried to research Charlie’s death, but nothing has come up. Maybe because it’s suicide. The local historian was aware of the story as well.

There is also talk of a woman who wanders the streets of Springbrook, especially in the summer. Apparently she is a widow of a soldier that didn’t return.

So far he seems harmless, not angry, but it is his space!”

Pineside Place NE — Haunted Calgary Database

“We used to live on Pineside Place NE from Fall 2006 – Jan 2008 and this place is definitely haunted.

Shortly after moving in, we started experiencing some pretty strange things. For example, at night, as I’d lay in bed about to sleep, I would hear footsteps, creaking, a door close, a cupboard open or close. I’d check up on my kids, but they’d be fast asleep. My husband and I would see small flashes of light, as if it was running across the floor. One time my father in law was visiting and he saw the same thing.

The house was a four level split. My husband was fixing a sink one day on the 3rd level bathroom and no one else was home. He was on his hands and knees looking under the vanity and heard some very loud footsteps coming up from the 4th level. He said the hair on the back of his neck stood straight up. It felt as if something was right behind him. He picked up a wrench thinking that someone had broken into the house, searched the entire house, but found nothing.

We never talked about it around the kids because we didn’t want to frighten them. One night after I put the kids to bed, my 7 year old son said he was lying on his back in bed looking up at the ceiling when he saw a man’s face come out of the side of the wall. He was so scared he put the covers over his face and was terrified to call out for help.

Another time, we saw what appeared to be a mini blue “tornado” that swirled down the hallway and disappeared. This blue object was maybe a foot high and was swirling very fast about 4 feet off the ground. It was just bizarre.

On yet another occasion, the kids and I were sitting at the dining room table next to the bay window during dinner when a man’s face suddenly appeared in the window and vanished. I was like “oh my god, did you see that??”

My husband ended up getting a transfer to another province, so we sold and moved out.

Sometime after we moved, we were telling our friends and family about our crazy experiences in that house. We googled the address on Google Maps and when we zoomed in to the house. We could see the man’s face that appeared in the dining room window, now looking out of what used to be our son’s bedroom window. It was just the freakiest thing and still gives me the creeps. I saved the Google Maps page to my favorites, but the link doesn’t seem to be working anymore. I wish I would of printed that page when I had the chance!”

Syncrude Twin Towers Apartment Building – Haunted Alberta Database

The following report was sent into our website by Caroleann on May 30, 2014:

“This story is about what happened to me roughly 8 months during the year 2007 in the Syncrude Twin Towers low rise on the 4th floor.

While I was sitting at my computer one night in my bedroom, lying on the table next to me was an empty Pepsi bottle. As I was looking into it I could see my reflection and then I could see two figures in the bottle standing on each side of me. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! They were people-like figures with black cloaks with hoods, and they just stood there. So I just laid the bottle down and ignored it went to bed scared, thinking about what I saw.

The next day I started hearing papers rattling in my closet. I just ignored it but it wouldn’t stop. I thought it was a rat or something but I went through this box, nothing but a Soloman Bible that my roommate picked up from a guy at work. So I tried to read a few words but didn’t understand the language. I put it back into the box. The next night there was a fire broke out two doors down from me. We were woken at 2am by some man knocking on our door screaming “FIRE!” I opened the door and nothing but smoke so I panicked and started crawling towards the fire. I realized I was going the wrong way so I turned around and crawled till I could see the clear and got out safely.

The apartment that the fire started in burned like a match box inside and never burned through the walls or roof, it was totally black and seemed as though it was a controlled fire. The fire burnt itself out within the apartment. By the time the fire department arrived the fire should have burned more apartments but it contained itself within this one apartment. So then we were able to go back to our apartment hours later.

The next day I came home from work and was sitting on my bed when I heard someone unlocking my door. What I saw was a big man that walked across my living room. I said to myself “Thats strange it’s only 5pm and my roommate is home. Weird cause he didn’t come home from work till 7pm.” So, I sat there listening but not a sound. I walked up to the living room and no one was there. I went back down the hallway to my room to sit and watch to see my roommate, then the same man came out my living walking towards the door. When I ran up to the door there was no one there.

Every day at five this man would unlock my door, come in and dissappear. Then every day for months at 5 o’clock this man would walk in, come down the hallway and go into my bathroom off my bedroom and shut the door. I would open the door and no one in the bathroom, so I go back to my room and lay on my bed and be startled to what I was seeing.

So as days went on this “thing” started to torment me by kicking the tub. I could hear the noise throughout the apartment all night long. I go in the bathroom, there is nothing or no one there. I came home from work the next day not feeling well. I came in, locked my door, went for a nap when a shout woke me. A security guy was standing over me telling me how he just came around the corner and my door was wide open and he just seen this black shadow leave my apartment. I was shocked and kind of spooked and left for awhile that day.

When I came back that night, I went into the bathroom and was fixing my hair in the mirror when I seen a shadow on the wall moved at the corner of my eye. It was a terrifying moment for me. It scared me and I jumped. As I was looking at my shadow I realized it wasn’t me, my hair was pinned up and my shadow had its hair down. I went and got my room mate thinking I was losing my mind, so when he came in the shadow ran across the wall. My roommate who is a large man screamed and ran out of the apartment, I ran after him.

After we were brave enough we came back in. I went to bed scared to death. I slept with the Catholic bible the whole time all this was happening.

The next day same thing again, man coming to the bathroom and closing the door again. No one there. So as I go into the bathroom I was standing by the toilet when I noticed my shadow started moving. I ran and got the mananger, two security guards, my roommate and two others standing in my bathroom watching as I stood still my shadow would slid across the wall and slid down to the floor. We all stood there with our mouths dropped, no one saying anything while I’m there asking them “Do you see it? What is it?” and one of the security guards spoke up totally in shock and said “Yes, we see it, and we don’t know what it is.” So we left the bathroom and came back in 3 times and it did the same thing each time we entered.

The next day I walked into the bathroom. As I opened the door quickly, a shadow of a little child was on my shower wall and it jumped! I scared this thing it, actually got a fright. So again I ran out of the room.

Sitting on my bed talking to my room mate this one day after the bathroom incident, and this voice came over his head saying “Hello, hello.” in a loud,clear voice. We both looked at each other and I said “Did you just hear that?” he said “Yeahhh”, I said “What did it say?” he said “hello, hello.” We both ran outside of the building again. So again after we regained our courage, we came back to our apartment and went to my room and this smell hit me. It was horrible! I never ever smelled anything like this in my life, Nothing even close. It smelled like sulfur and something that was rotten, it wasn’t of this earth. I was gagging, while my room mate was sitting there and he couldn’t smell anything. I was so confused, I opened the bedroom door and took a deep breath and came back inside the room and it was gone. All of a sudden it felt like a million wasps stinging me all over my body. It was so painful and it was just torturing me day in and day out. When I would leave the apartment building the pain would stop, and when I go back it would start again. I spent hundreds of dollars at the drug stores on pesticides and nothing worked. So I figured it wasn’t physical wasps or any other insects in the apartment.

As time went on, in the mornings I would wake up gasping for air like something was choking me and would eventually let me go before I pass out. The bee stings would not stop either. When I tried to put my hands where the stings would hit, it felt like it would go deeper and bite harder. It was a nightmare in itself. I started praying to god to help me, as I was doing this the sun casts a figure of a cross on the wall. So I kept the Catholic bible in my lap knew he was there to help me so the long days of this torture kept going. All the trips to the emergency and nothing to be found.

I forgot to mention with the first experience my arm would freeze just like if it was frozen from the inside out until I leave the apartment.

This one night I was approaching my bedroom and when I opened the door my night-stand came flying at me and everything going everywhere. So I pick up the phone and called the church. I didn’t know what to do and why this thing was attacking me like this so the priest was afraid and wouldn’t show up. He told me to pray the Our Father and pray to St. Micheal and I did. So at this point I wasn’t afraid any more and I started to get mad at this thing in my apartment, and then this horrible unearthly shriek came through my window vibrating through the tv and then went through me. I was startled by the sound so I went to go grab a drink when something inside me told me to wait. I went to the bathroom instead and went back to my bedroom instead of going to the kitchen. When I went back to my room there was a can of pepsi lying on my pillow. I picked it up and it was cold as though it came from the freezer. Now I was getting freaked out, it was bringing things to my room.

There is much more that isn’t included in the story above, but I’ll be writing all night.

Anyways the day I was moving out I was cleaning the bathroom when there was a knock at the door. It was a girl to ask me to cut her hair. I said to her “I packed and have no towels so go home, get a towel and come back.” I locked my door, went back to the bathroom and there was a brand new purple towel sitting on my sink folded. I just ran out of there with my stuff as fast as I could go. And as I was leaving the building, at that very moment, four apartments went up in flames to no known reason. Security was running through the building alerting the tenants and trying to evacuate the building. I stopped one of them and asked what happened, he said “Four apartments are burning and there is devil faces burning in the doors. This place is evil im getting the hell out of here!” (He lived in the building and moved out the same day as me).

I got out of there and never had an encounter since. Out of the 7 people who witnessed what happened in my apartment with me, 2 people survived and the strangest thing the 3 of us moved out the same day. 3 out of seven was found dead sitting up in chairs in their apartments and one went into a coma and never came out of it to my knowledge.

Also another thing I forgot to mention, after we moved out, I had one of those security guards that survived help me put pictures from my camera onto my computer. These pictures were full of images of shadows and orbs or strange light. They were in my personal folder on my computer and they were taken due to infringement and I couldn’t understand why my pictures were taken away out of a personal folder. The security guard had copies of my pictures into his own computer and the pictures were taken from him too and he would agree to be a witness to that.
