Phantom Ship of Northumberland Strait – Haunted Nova Scotia Database

Location: Northumberland Strait, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Canada
Type: three-masted ship
Built: n/a

NOTE: Michelle McKay, the founder of Cold Spot Paranormal Research, has a special interest in this ghost ship. Her grandmother saw it in Nova Scotia, she will add her testimony to this page shortly.

This phantom ship has been a very popular sighting along the Northumberland Strait ever since 1786. The Northumberland Strait flows through Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick.

Descriptions of the ghost ship vary, but most agree that the ship is a three-masted square rigger with “burning flames leaping from the mast”.

The ship has also been sighted during the winter when the Strait is completely frozen over.

Some believe that Jean Pierre de Roma watched the burning ship from Brudenell Point and that he concluded that it was indeed a ghost ship and that the ship most likely belonged to pirates at one time…

Although nobody knows for certain who the ship belonged to or which ship it was, some say it belonged to an English Admiral. After looting the Roma settlement, he ordered his crew to take the prettiest girl they could find. Once they captured the girl and destroyed the settlement, the crew moved to the outskirts of Georgetown and anchored the vessel at Boughton Island. Supposedly, the Admiral attempted to seduce the frightened young women, and a struggle ensued. A lamp was knocked over spilling oil on the floor causing a huge fire. The crew cut the ship away from the other two ships it was tied up beside. Eventually, the ship floated away and sank off the coast of Pictou Island and the image of the burning ship is that of the English warship.

UPDATE RECEIVED DEC 28, 2017 FROM JOSHUA:

“It was October of 2005. I was almost 15 years old.

We had a family vacation in PEI coming up and were staying in Pictou, Nova Scotia before boarding the ferry. I vividly recall the moon rising over the calm waters of the Northumberland Strait. It was about 10 to 11 at night.

I was outside taking in the chilly, fresh sea air cutting through the winds when I noticed something in the distance. I’ve always loved ships since I was a young boy and have been fascinated in the sinkings of World War I and II ships, as well as the Olympic Class Sisters, The Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic.

I saw a beautiful three-masted schooner coming in, as one would put “hot” or fast, for those who don’t know what that means. I ran back in to get my grandfather’s binoculars. He came out with me and I pointed out the ship in the distance; the unfurled sails taking in the winds, though there was nary a breeze blowing.

I peered through the binoculars, watching helplessly as the ship suddenly caught ablaze. My grandfather, who stood in awe, watched with me. He knew what it was; the stories he had heard while he was serving in the Royal Canadian Navy.

Time seemed to slow down as some others in the hotel we were staying at witnessed it. Some believed they were dreaming, others didn’t know what to make of it. Some called Emergency services to report a ship on fire in the Strait.

Before we knew it, 45 minutes had passed and she went down by the head, vanishing from sight without a trace. I vividly remember the winds suddenly picking up, blowing hard across the land and sea.

It’s been 12 years now and this is the first time I’ve opened up about it. After confirming from multiple friends who lived there that they too have seen it. I dismissed it as a dream for a long time but always heard whispers on the winds about it from mariners here in Halifax.

I’ve always had a paranormal sense. I’ve seen ghosts across the fields of Flanders, the old battlefields of World War I and II, in houses abandoned, and of family and friends in my own.

But the fact I witnessed the legendary ghost ship of the Northumberland strait still baffles me to this day.”

True Ghost Story: Dog Pulled His Cage Along With Him

Location: Cardigan, Prince Edward Island, Canada

The following report was sent into our website by Mary on Dec 1, 2012:

“Last year, I was visiting my friend’s house for the night. She had informed me of some activity beforehand, so I convinced her to ask the spirit some questions. Immediately upon walking into her house, I didn’t like the atmosphere of the basement.

The only other person in the house was her mother, who had already been asleep for hours. At this point it was around 2 or 3am. We asked it to show a sign of itself. Nothing happened. I was getting pretty skeptical. I asked, “wake the cat up that is sleeping on the couch beside us” and then the cat woke up. I would have called this a result of coincidence if the next incident didn’t occur. At the same time as the cat was woken up, my friend’s dog in the basement starting panicking and barking. He was so frightened that he was trying to run and pull his cage along with him. We were scared at this point. We run back to her room and after closing her door, she says “Did you move that?” I obviously have no idea what she is talking about. She pointed to a purse on her door that was held down by a heavy embroidered fabric. Apparently the flowers were always facing forwards, but now the back was showing. We decided that we thought all of this up and went to sleep.

The next morning, her mother is infuriated with her for leaving the lights on in the basement. We swore that we shut them off. I remember shutting them off because I was so terrified of the basement that I ran up the stairs as soon as she flicked the switch.

If one of these events had occurred, I would have ignored them but all of these strange happenings occurring at once is interesting.. and frightening.”

True Ghost Story: Get Out Of My House

Location: Charlottetown, Prince Edward IslandCanada

The following report was sent into our website by Emmalee on Feb 4, 2012:

“Ok, my sister and I were just sitting on the couch watching TV when this occurred. I was watching the TV as if I were glued to it, and my younger sister, Jesse, was playing on her phone. We were home alone at this point and we heard a loud BANG in the kitchen. We figured that it was just the cat in there so we ignored it. The kitchen is at the other side of the house on the bottom floor. Not a very big house but big enough. About ten minutes later, we hear the same BANG in the hallway just outside of the livingroom, where we were. This time we knew it wasn’t the cat because the cat was now laying beside Jesse. I went out to go check it out, but before I even left the room, I felt a huge, long, extremely cold chill which caused me to turn around. As soon as I sat back down, Jesse was looking straight behind me with her phone turned off. She looked extremely scared. I didn’t want to turn around and see what was behind me… but she kept stuttering words that I couldn’t understand. She finally got the nerve to whisper, “Don’t turn around, Emmalee…” I didn’t. I just slowly started to walk to the couch.

I sat down and turned the corner of my eye to the doorway. There, I saw a tall man with gleaming red eyes. His hands were scratched along with his pants, head and arms.He screamed, “SCARED TO FACE ME? GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!!!” Then ran to my ear and whispered “See you later.” And he was gone. Just like that. Jesse was still staring in the doorway. I thought in shock. I was scared. Jesse was scared.

We told Mom and Dad about the man as soon as they got home from their dinner. It was their anniversary. They immediately told us about a man who was murdered in this house by an intruder. We moved out within the next two months. We don’t see any other things like that anymore, and I’m just happy that we’re out of that house.”

True Ghost Story: Haunted Trailer

Location: Morell, Prince Edward IslandCanada

The following report was sent into our website by Franki on April 4, 2009:

“I think there’s someone in this house. My grandmother lives in a trailer in Morell, I was out in Morell for the night when my mom went to Maine and I slept in my dad’s old room. So it was about 12 am and I couldn’t sleep so I read myself to sleep, my grandmother was asleep at this time. I clearly remember falling asleep with the light on and the blankets were under me.

I woke up in the morning and the light was out and the blankets were on me. I don’t think my grandmother would have woken up and put them on me because it was Summertime. I tried the light just to see if it had burnt out but it hadn’t. I was so freaked out so the next night I slept on the couch.

Once again I couldn’t sleep so I again read myself to sleep. The book was on the table beside me that night. I awoke to hear a clanging sound, like somebody was banging pans together, I looked around in the darkness and I saw a white mist by the stove like there was somebody cooking.

I turned the light on and there was nothing, the clanging noise had stopped and all I could hear were the crickets chirping outside. I was going to read again but when I looked at the table where my book had been, it wasn’t there. I looked under everything and still couldn’t find it.

I told my grandmother the next morning and she said “You dont expect me to believe you, do you?” I was mad.

History of the trailer:
The trailer had been moved from New Brunswick because the man who had lived in it, passed away. I personally think it’s his ghost, he’s kind of scary.”

True Ghost Story: Ghost Chases Wife From Her House

Location: Tignish, Prince Edward IslandCanada

The following report was sent into our website by Clyde on October 2, 2008:

“My wife and I purchased a house in Tignish PEI that was built in 1918 by a wealthy merchant. The house has passed through two families prior to our purchase of the property. We have started a complete refurburish of the house and recently we have experienced several unexplained occurrances. Doors have slamed shut, and I have felt the presence of something that has on many occasions touched my shoulder. My 36 year old son who was on a visit has been grabbed by the feet while sleeping. We have heard foot steps at night but when investigated there is no sign of anyone. When passing by the main stair case we have experienced a severe cold feeling that passes when you are out of the area. On October 1, 2008 @approximately 23.30 hrs my wife was startled by the sound of marching troops that grew louder forcing her from the second story bedroom and finally out of the house. She is presently residing at the local inn that was formally a convent.”

King’s Playhouse in Georgetown – Haunted Prince Edward Island Database

Location: Georgetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada
Type: theatre

Compiled by Michelle McKay (founder of Cold Spot Paranormal Research™) on March 18, 2005:

It is said that the staff at this theatre have even designated the front row centre seat as a “reserved seat” for their ghost, whom they call “Captain George”. It is alleged that the apparition of a military captain visits the theatre during show time carrying a lantern, and dressed in a “long coat”.

Captain George has also been accused of “grabbing” the ankles of members of the audience.

Reports from actors and technicians indicate they have seen Captain George’s apparition walking on the stage, as well as, behind the stage.
